Artist: Duane Moyle

Originally commissioned by St Luke’s Church in Tauranga, artist Duane Moyle spent 450 hours designing and executing this work. The original is 200cm x 200cm, oils on plywood. Our photographic print includes the original frame in the photograph. The size of the original reflects the largest board the artist could get into his bedroom/studio.

This is Duane’s interpretation of the traditional church year and is strongly connected to his location in Tauranga and the Waikato.

“My art practice is about wondering, in both senses of the word. I am hoping to speculate curiously about new ideas and traditional modes of art making while also capturing the mystery of life and the world around us, within us and beyond us. I am increasingly interested in ancient wisdom, myths, legends and timeless truths. Not from a wistful nostalgia, but to ensure we don’t forget the lessons of our ancestors and all the good things humanity has learnt.

I grew up in Mt Maunganui and after a period in Auckland and the UK I settled with my wife and kids in Tauranga in 2013. I studied visual art in Auckland and completed a master of Fine Art from Wimbledon College of Art in 2008. I have exhibited in London, Auckland, Kinston and Tauranga. In 2021 I resigned from my full -time position as Exhibition Manager at Tauranga Art Gallery to pursue my art practice. I have recently been selected as a finalist in the New Zealand Painting and Printmaking Awards.”
